Bio:	Professor Ryan joined the faculty at Ohio Wesleyan in 1998. Her areas of specialization are (African) American literature, Black feminist theory, Black women's cinema, and African diaspora literatures.   Her other areas of interests are cultural and critical race theory, African diaspora oral traditions, and African diaspora religions. Professor Ryan has been a visiting lecturer and research associate in the Women's Studies in Religion Program at Harvard Divinity School, and has held a Ford postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for the Study of Black Literature and Culture at the University of Pennsylvania. She teaches a variety of courses on African American/diaspora literatures, African diaspora/Black women's cinema, and the Freshman Writing Seminar.
Publications:	Professor Ryan's published works include articles in Modern Fiction Studies, Toni Morrison: Theoretical and Critical Approaches, Women Preachers and Prophets through Two Millennia of Christianity, Approaches to Teaching the Novels of Toni Morrison, Studies in the Literary Imagination, Critical Voicings of Black Liberation and Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society. Her most recent article, "Language and narrative technique in Toni Morrison's novels," appears in The Cambridge Companion to Toni Morrison (2007). Professor Ryan is the author of Spirituality as Ideology in Black Women's Film and Literature (University of Virginia Press, 2005) and is currently at work on a second book on Teaching Black Women's Cinema.
